Single Review: Bat Flattery - Sweet Thomas

We'll be delving into the 6th single release from Bat Flattery, Sweet Thomas - a somewhat slower and less chaotic song, compared to heavier and more frantic releases such as Kalashnikov and Year of the Glutton. With catchy lyrics and bassline Sweet Thomas by Bat Flattery perfectly captures what most of us feel about how life is in the current climate. This ‘politically charged’ track is so well thought out instrumentally I found myself listening to it on repeat.

Influenced by Fugazi and by social commentary, Bat Flattery clearly incorporates this in their music consistently with their other tracks. My personal favourite features of “Sweet Thomas” was the catchy bassline combined with the guitar to create a very well thought-out ‘question and answer’ instrumental. The drums really shine through using this technique and the celeste, which gets a small feature during the buildup of the song.

Looking into the powerful lyrics and song meaning into further detail you appreciate the song a lot more as you discover something new the more you listen to it. By linking the influence of today's political state,, where the higher powers seem to be causing upset especially with people of a younger generation, the technical aspects of the song and the lyrics speak volumes. For example, the Celeste was used in classic music to create nostalgia and the lyrics sound as if they are begging and pleading to those in higher power. It is as if you

are reflecting on what once was. The final build up of the song really pulls the song together, almost like a massive burst of emotion and then fades back into the bass and guitar playing as if you’ve been on a journey throughout the track.
